It's 2016 now, and we've made some changes to the sidebar size. And even though I made a sample ad for you guys with the rest of the sample ads, somehow the thread itself didn't get posted. Weird how that works. Anyway, we can now restart the Community Promotion Ads for 2016!

Keep in mind, we have updated some of the guidelines compared to previously - the changes are marked in bold in the Image Requirements section.

What are Community Promotion Ads?

Community Promotion Ads are community-vetted advertisements that will show up on the main site, in the right sidebar. The purpose of this question is the vetting process. Images of the advertisements are provided, and community voting will enable the advertisements to be shown.

Why do we have Community Promotion Ads?

This is a method for the community to control what gets promoted to visitors on the site. For example, you might promote the following things:

  • the site's twitter account
  • relevant blogs and websites about computer science
  • computer science, events, conferences, or meetups
  • anything else your community would genuinely be interested in

The goal is for future visitors to find out about the stuff your community deems important. This also serves as a way to promote information and resources that are relevant to your own community's interests, both for those already in the community and those yet to join.

Why do we reset the ads every year?

Some services will maintain usefulness over the years, while other things will wane to allow for new faces to show up. Resetting the ads every year helps accommodate this, and allows old ads that have served their purpose to be cycled out for fresher ads for newer things. This helps keep the material in the ads relevant to not just the subject matter of the community, but to the current status of the community. We reset the ads once a year, every December.

The community promotion ads have no restrictions against reposting an ad from a previous cycle. If a particular service or ad is very valuable to the community and will continue to be so, it is a good idea to repost it. It may be helpful to give it a new face in the process, so as to prevent the imagery of the ad from getting stale after a year of exposure.

How does it work?

The answers you post to this question must conform to the following rules, or they will be ignored.

  1. All answers should be in the exact form of:

    Please do not add anything else to the body of the post. If you want to discuss something, do it in the comments.

  2. The question must always be tagged with the magic tag. In addition to enabling the functionality of the advertisements, this tag also pre-fills the answer form with the above required form.

Image requirements

  • The image that you create must be 300 x 250 pixels, or double that if using high DPI.
  • Must be hosted through our standard image uploader (imgur)
  • Must be GIF or PNG
  • No animated GIFs
  • Absolute limit on file size of 150 KB
  • If the background of the image is white or partially white, there must be a 1px (2px for high DPI) border surrounding it.

Score Threshold

There is a minimum score threshold an answer must meet (currently 6) before it will be shown on the main site.

  • $\begingroup$ Question: why are the borders not provided/enforced by the style CSS? That way, the borders could pick up the colors of the design. Also, are the borders a requirement for transparent backgrounds as well? $\endgroup$

  • $\begingroup$ Yes, borders are required if it's transparent because that ultimately results in a white background (since the site background is white). Not sure what you mean about the first bit though - adapting the CSS to the design of each individual ad? $\endgroup$

  • $\begingroup$ @Raphael Ah. Sometimes the border is itself part of the ad design. For example, the arXiv.org ad below has a multicolor border as appropriate for its own design. Wouldn't look as good if we just had a generic border from the site itself. Likewise with any ad that isn't plain white, once you get to colorful stuff, gotta have the borders (if even any) match appropriately to the colors. $\endgroup$

  • $\begingroup$ As the author of it, I would like to add write-math.com. It is faster, has also the unicode-symbol for copy-and-pasting and a text search. However, it can only recognize 370 symbols by writing (but those symbols are recognized very well). $\endgroup$

  • $\begingroup$ thx all very much for the votes hitting +6 as of now. followup/ revealed: the picture is a not-well-known Turing statue with an Enigma at Bletchley Park. the ad is not meant to evoke all of CS (long/ complex!) or even be very direct about its purpose, instead meant to provoke curiosity. some (famous! effective!) ads from marketing are like this! also a ref to Turings very applied side now overlooked by some. $\endgroup$

    $\begingroup$ This ad makes no sense to me. Turing had little to do with coding, in the sense that the word is used today (programming, not encrypting). The image has nothing to do with the concept of "chat". And coding has nothing to do with CS Stack Exchange. So what's going on here? $\endgroup$

    $\begingroup$ various/ several respondents on this thread seem not very historically aware. Turing helped design/ build/ "program" one of the 1st computers the so-called Bombe. the idea of whether coding is intrinsic to CS or not is a debated/ controversial statement in the field with expert/ elite proponents of each opposing view. the ad does not seek to resolve it in only a few words. still awaiting a superior alternative from all the unimaginative/ narrowminded naysayers/ critics/ PARTYPOOPERS who dont really participate much in Computer Science Chat anyway, and apparently have zero interest in building it up! $\endgroup$

Also, referring to people who disagree with your as boldface-italics-shoutycaps-partypoopers isn't the most constructive remark you could make and nor is it the best way of getting people onto your side. $\endgroup$

  • $\begingroup$ DR ah so are you against parties or not? there is no question Turing was one of the original programmers/ coders by any reasonable interpretation. the Bombe had unmistakable elements of programmability/ ("de-")coding. apparently this basic fact is not taught in modern CS indoctrination classes for some reason...? maybe basic historical origins of CS are being effectively airbrushed away by omission in favor of some kind of distorted ideological agenda? since nobody has noticed in their partiality, the coding reference is also an allusion to cryptography.... $\endgroup$

    $\begingroup$ GWR nearly all the other proposed caption ideas are acceptable to me but dont feel like rewriting them myself. think others are overthinking this & being overly oppositional. marketing is not the same/ different than science! this is the 1st user-contributed custom ad in the history of this site. maybe dont set the bar so high? ps for all the ideological/ abstract/ theoretician/ hairsplitting purists, consider pseudocode is code! and how many advanced (T)CS papers contain pseudocode? ad is performing very well as far as hits/ day. dont see compelling reason to further tinker. $\endgroup$
